Most Asthma Not Under Control

A recent US survey published in the June 2007 Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology showed that an alarming 55% do not have their asthma under control. The data also showed that an incredible 54% of uncontrolled asthmatics and 38% of controlled asthmatics had an asthma attack so severe that they feared for their life.

This shows there is a lot of room for improvement in asthma care, both on the part of the patient and the doctor. Most of the study participants did not have a written asthma action plan from their doctor.

An asthma action plan is a written set of instructions guiding the patient on when to take their medications and when to increase certain medications when they are having symptoms. Use of an asthma action plan is associated with improved asthma control.
