H1N1 Pandemic - Asthma and COPD Risk

During the H1N1 flu pandemic, people with asthma and COPD are more likely to get severe symptoms of H1N1 flu and more likely to need hospital care for it. Individuals with asthma and COPD are at higher risk and should, along with their caregivers, take extra steps to ensure protection.

 Get the H1N1 flu shot and the seasonal flu shot as soon as possible.

 Take steps to avoid getting H1N1 or other infections:
o  Wash your hands properly and often.
o  Use an alcohol-based cleaner if you can’t wash your hands.
o  Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
o  Stay away from people who may be sick.
o  Disinfect common surfaces in your home regularly.

 Make sure your asthma or COPD symptoms are under good control and follow your asthma or COPD action plan.

 Take your medicines as your doctor prescribed them and have an extra supply of your asthma or COPD medicines on hand.

 If you get sick, stay home. Keep following the advice in your asthma or COPD action plan and follow the steps in this section: What should I do if I think I have H1N1 flu (swine flu)?
