Question & Answer

Q: I'm starting university this year and I'll be leaving home. Is there anything I need to do for my asthma?

A: You bet! Your parents aren't going to be around to guide you, so it's time to take control.

- Make sure you have enough medicines to last until you find a new doctor. Find out if your college or university has a student health centre where you can get prescriptions.
- Check out your university to see if it will cover the cost of your medicines.
- Find out where you'll be living. If you're renting, make sure the home doesn't have high levels of asthma triggers: check for moulds and dampness, and make sure no pets or smokers live there now or recently.
- In university or college residence, ask for a carpet-free and smoke-free room.
- Let school authorities know if you have problems with your asthma.
- Try to launder your bedding every week or two to get rid of dust mites. If possible, get allergy-proof covers for your mattress and pillows.
- Know what foods you need to avoid, if any.
